Virus Scan Option for Patrons
We have a scanning option on Barracuda for patrons who think they may have a virus. Barracuda will find most but not all spyware. Direct them to the following address: http://192.168.0.3:8000/
Once there, click on "Run Barracuda Spyware Removal Tool". There should be an option to "Remove" any spyware. After clicking "Remove", reboot the computer.

Internet Issues
When troubleshooting the Internet connection, check that the lights on the router are green. If they are red, try resetting the router by turning it off for about 30 seconds and then back on.
If the lights are green on the router, try resetting Barracuda by turning it off (Blue power button on the right) for 10 seconds and then back on. Barracuda takes a couple of minutes to start working again.

Reservations for Macs
Due to our small number of Apple computers, the Macs in the Tech Room are now available for our patrons to reserve. Reservations are limited to 2 hours. (1 hour on Sundays.) Patrons can sign up for a reservation time at the upstairs Service Desk. The sign up sheet for the Tech Macs is the same sheet for Creation Station reservations. In the morning when we are opening and putting up meeting room reservation signs, check the reservation sheet and, if necessary, fill out a Mac reservation card and place it next to the appropriate Mac on the clear display stand.

The Customer Focused Library
Here are some notes from the discussion on improving our library for our customers (patrons). I've grouped them by major categories:
SIGNAGE: improve shelve signs, use signs to promote databases within the collection,
DISPLAYS: Use end-caps of rows to display in stacks; DVD spinner by column or self-check; rotate displays - include databases in displays
DEWEY-Less: What are the + and - ; perhaps try in one area/zone to test
SECTIONS: Is travel working? Can this space be better used?

Another way to look up patron accounts...
Sometimes you need to look up a patron's account in Millennium, and you just can't seem to find the person you're looking for. They might have a completely unique first name, but since Millennium always looks for the last name, that doesn't help. Wouldn't you love to be able to search by their first name, their middle name, or even their kid's name? What I've done is to export the contents of a Millennium List called "tlw patrons" and leave a copy on the desktop of the circulation and reference desk computers. Its just a big old .txt file that opens with a program called Notepad. Use the Ctl-f key to open up a search box. When you find the patron, simply copy and paste their barcode number directly into Millennium and open the account.
Feel free to help keep the list and the export file up to date. Andy

Not Broken, just temperamental...
Our receipt printer is not broken, it just has a sensitivity problem. There is a sensor switch inside the printer that detects the presence of the paper roll. The roll must be slid over to the right side in order to properly contact the sensor switch. It looks like some of the rolls are smaller than the others (from side to side) and so to make a short roll work properly I folded up a piece of scrap paper and slipped it in on the left side of the roll. I guess about 90% of the time that I have had an error message from the receipt printer it is because of this problem. Andy.

NEW: CASH DRAWER RECEIPTS TALLY SHEET
A New and Improved Tally Sheet for the Cash Drawer Receipts will be here Monday, March 16th. Same sheet for upstairs and downstairs desks, much easier to use.
This will improve our ability to track $$ for the budget.
ALSO: please note: when taking in a check, write on it what it is for....
and it is NOT necessary to write down (tally) for B&W copies/prints or anything tracked in Millenium (fines/lost&paid)
When we track REFERENCE STATISTICS once a week/once a month, we will use a totally different sheet. So for that one week, we'll have two sheets..one for $$ one for REFERENCE.
Questions?
Let me know....

While you are reading the NY you can actualy doble click in the word that you don't have any idea about its meaning, and it will show up an interrogation mark. Click in the interrogation mark and you will have the meaning of the word. It is like having a dictionary just right there with you, without the need to go and search for the word in another dictionary.

Citations Info
Hi Service Specialists,
I spent the morning with three seventh grade classes (I'm doing an internship with Tava at the High School library for my masters program) teaching MLA citation. We may get some further questions on this from the kids.
The 7th graders are currently compiling their bibliographies (Works Cited pages) for reports on specific countries and may come here asking for further assistance with citation. Most of them have a book, a magazine and a couple of websites to cite. They are using CIA World Factbook, pages in which are treated like web documents. They are also relying on CultureGrams, which gets cited using the rules for subscription databases (basically the same but they also record that they accessed it through WPL).
I emailed y'all the PP presentation that I put together and showed them this morning. I also worked with some of them in the HS tech lab and the major questions they had were about formatting (can be obnoxious in MS Word) and where to find the authors, dates, and titles within web resources.
If you have questions not addressed in the Powerpoint, check out this resource from Purdue. There are examples for what to do with complicated or just out of the norm situations.
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/
Thanks in advance for helping!

ILL Mystery Unraveled...
How to Check in an ILL item in Millennium
Each of the ILL items that we check out to our patrons is associated with a small blue card that has a call number, like "ILL 410" and a standard barcode. If you feel like running upstairs and finding the blue card that matches your ILL item, you just check in the item by scanning the barcode on that small blue card.
Or do it the easy way!

If the paper slip is still in the book, look for the ILL number, it is hand written and is between 1 and 399. Now go to the normal checkin page in Millennium (F2 or F9) and type in the special letter 'e' (like n, this is a prefix, it indicates Dewey) followed by "ILL " and finally the ILL number.
This should have the exact same effect as if you scanned in the barcode -- no need to highlight, copy or paste!

COURTESY "HOLDS" - patron will return later with Card
OK....so here's a procedure for assisting with HOLDS for patrons without cards.
Instead of putting on the shelf with Name and Sticky Try This:
Call up the Patron Record - Go to Hold - Add a Hold
Use the barcode of the item - Hold Selected Item - Place the Hold.
Then Trip the HOLD: Check in the item - Fulfill Hold (no slip)
Place a piece of paper in the item with a date 6 days in the future.
This changes the status of the item to "on holdshelf" and provides the patron with an email reminder that they have items awaiting them at the Library.

Holds Pickup: Please read!
When checking out items on the Holdshelf, be sure to Clear/Satisfy the Existing Hold.
Occassionally a patron may authorize another individual to check-out their Hold.
In this case, satisfy (do not Override) the Existing HOLD for the Original patron.
(Otherwise the HOLD goes back to the original patron when returned.)

Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP)
NEW YEAR = NEW WARMTH FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
DENVER – January 2009 – Nothing is more comforting than a warm house during the cold winter months. However, comfort is not the only reason to keep your home warm in the New Year. A poorly heated house can be extremely harmful to the well being of children and senior citizens, those most vulnerable to health problems caused by cold temperatures.
Children and senior citizens lose body heat more easily than adults and are more likely to have preexisting conditions that are aggravated by cold. Children and seniors also tend to have low defenses, leaving them more susceptible to colds, the flu and pneumonia. The Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) can help prevent these issues by assisting families with their expensive heating bills through the cold winter months.
“While some adults may be able to withstand colder temperatures in the home, children and the elderly may not be as strong or healthy,” said LEAP director Todd Jorgensen. “This is why it so important to keep a house warm. LEAP can help families cover heating costs, making sure that the home is safe for all of its inhabitants.”
LEAP pays the highest benefits to those with the highest heating bills and lowest incomes by family size. Applicant income cannot exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty index, which equals a maximum income of $3,184 per month before taxes for a household of four people. The anticipated average LEAP benefit for 2007-2008 is approximately $316 per family.
LEAP applicants must provide a copy of valid identification and a completed affidavit indicating that they are lawfully present in the United States with their applications to the program. Applicants must also be responsible for paying heating costs, either to a utility company, or to a landlord as part of rent. Currently, El Paso, Arapahoe, Adams, Pueblo, and Jefferson County are the LEAP offices receiving the largest amount of applications this year.
While LEAP provides assistance paying for heating bills, there are additional ways to keep yourself and your family warm and safe. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) offers the following tips you should know to prevent cold-related health and safety problems:
• If you plan to use a wood stove, fireplace, or space heater, be extremely careful. Install a smoke detector and a battery-operated carbon monoxide detector near the area to be heated. Test them monthly, and replace batteries twice yearly.
• If you don’t need extra ventilation, keep as much heat as possible inside your home. Avoid unnecessary opening of doors or windows. Close off unneeded rooms, stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors, and close draperies or cover windows with blankets at night.
• Eating well-balanced meals will help you stay warmer. Do not drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages—they cause your body to lose heat more rapidly. Instead, drink warm, sweet beverages or broth to help maintain your body temperature.
• Extreme cold can cause water pipes in your home to freeze and sometimes rupture. When very cold temperatures are expected:
* Leave all water taps slightly open so they drip continuously.
* Keep the indoor temperature warm.

* Improve the circulation of heated air near pipes. For
example, open kitchen cabinet doors beneath the kitchen sink.

Choose the Tax Form that Best Fits Your Needs
When you file your 2008 individual tax return, you will use one of three IRS tax forms. Be sure to use the simplest form you can, which will help you avoid costly errors or processing delays so you won’t have to wait to receive your refund. Each of these forms can be filed electronically, which speeds up the processing of your return.
Use the 1040EZ if:
Your taxable income is below $100,000
Your filing status is Single or Married Filing Jointly
You (and spouse) are under age 65 and not blind
You are not claiming any dependents
Your interest income is $1,500 or less
Use the 1040A if:
Your taxable income is below $100,000
You have capital gain distributions
You claim certain tax credits
You claim deductions for IRA contributions, student loan interest, educator expenses or higher education tuition and fees
If you cannot use the 1040EZ or the 1040A, you’ll probably need to file using the 1040. You must use the 1040 if:
Your taxable income is $100,000 or more
You claim itemized deductions
You are reporting self-employment income
You are reporting income from sale of property
When preparing your return, be sure to carefully check the instructions for the appropriate form. All IRS forms and instructions can be found on our Web site, IRS.gov.
